So about a week ago, after a less than productive ride on B where he was getting super hard in the jaw, I took him out of his broken kimberwick and put him in a single joint eggbutt snaffle.
After having a barn friend who is a professional get on him Friday night and explaining our most recent journey, she said the eggbutt was not working for him. He wasn’t responsive or adjustable. So Saturday morning I took a trek to the Mecca of affordable tack in my area called the NW Tack Consignment and picked up 3 new bits; a ported kimberwick, a waterford D ring and a Boucher bit. All to the tune of $34.
Side note, this is one of my FAVORITE placed to shop for used tack. I have found a Nunn Finer Figure 8 nose band for $20. I have found a practically brand new Weatherbeeta cooler for $30. It is perpetually my go to for anything I need. But I digress.
Anyways, Saturday after my shopping spree I arrived at the barn and changed out the eggbutt for the kimberwick and low and behold, we had a soft jaw, we had stretching over the back and adjustable gaits.
It always amazes me what bits can bring our in our equine partners. So I encourage you, if you having a problem with your 1100+lb teammate, after you have ruled out any type of pain or tack fit, try a different bit, you might see a world of difference.
Happy Riding! OH and stay safe in the wake of this virus!
